Sustainability and Safety in Action: Alaya Resort Ubud Sets a Strong Example

On a recent inspection visit to Alaya Resort Ubud, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand how the resort integrates sustainability and health & safety practices into its daily operations. As part of my role as Sustainability Coordinator at IDSC (Indonesian DMC Sustainability Collaboration), these inspections are essential to ensuring that our partner accommodations uphold the standards that support sustainable tourism in Indonesia.

The inspection was conducted in collaboration with the Sales Team from Happy Trails and the Product Manager from Jans Tour, representing the network of six member DMCs under IDSC. Their participation added valuable insights into how the resort’s practices align with both sustainability goals and operational needs from a DMC perspective.

From the moment we arrived, the Alaya team welcomed us with warmth and professionalism. The meeting was held in a serene and well-appointed lounge area that reflected the tranquil ethos of the resort itself — a fitting space for an open exchange of ideas on how sustainability and safety intersect with hospitality.

During our discussions, the Alaya team openly shared the current efforts being made to reduce their environmental impact. These include energy-efficient operations, responsible water use, waste segregation, and sourcing local, organic products where possible. More than just ticking boxes, these actions demonstrate a genuine commitment to minimizing their ecological footprint while also supporting local communities — a core value in sustainable tourism.

What particularly stood out was the active involvement of staff from various departments. Their awareness of sustainability and safety protocols, as well as their engagement in implementing these practices, spoke volumes about the internal culture Alaya has fostered. It’s clear that sustainability at Alaya is not just a top-down policy, but a collective mission embraced by all team members.

Health and safety were also thoroughly addressed during the visit. From fire safety systems and first aid preparedness to cleanliness standards and staff welfare, the resort showcased a proactive approach to risk management. These measures not only protect guests and staff but also contribute to building trust and long-term resilience in the tourism sector.

The presence of our colleagues from Happy Trails and Jans Tour during the inspection was especially valuable. Their feedback helped link Alaya’s on-site practices to broader guest experience expectations and DMC operational needs, ensuring alignment between sustainability principles and product quality.

This visit to Alaya Resort Ubud reaffirmed the importance of regular site inspections and open dialogue with our hotel partners. It also highlighted how impactful it is when sustainability becomes an integrated part of hospitality — not just a requirement, but a shared value.

As we continue to support and monitor sustainability efforts across our IDSC partner accommodations, we remain inspired by properties like Alaya that lead by example. Their commitment strengthens the foundation for a more responsible and resilient tourism industry in Indonesia.

The resort’s initiatives include reducing single-use plastics, using energy-efficient systems, providing continuous sustainability training for staff, and maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety — all of which contribute to a responsible and secure guest experience in the heart of Ubud.

Alaya Resort Ubud stands out as a shining example of how luxury, sustainability, and safety can go hand-in-hand, offering guests an enriching and responsible stay in Bali’s cultural hub.
